Awara Onsen — Ashiyu あわら温泉「芦湯」
Born in 1883 from an irrigation well: today 74 springs, from 33 to 77 degrees.
Awara Onsen was born in 1883, when hot water gushed from a well dug to irrigate the fields; the first inns opened the following year. It grew in the tourism boom of the Taishō and early Shōwa periods, helped by the arrival of the railway, and in 1927 it was selected among the ‘Nihon Hyakkei’ (Hundred Landscapes of Japan). The water is a sodium-calcium chloride saline type, neutral or slightly alkaline, among the most common thermal compositions in Japan.
