Kakegawa Castle (掛川城) 掛川城
Rebuilt in wood in 1994: the first keep rebuilt this way in the whole of Japan.
A Sengoku-period fortress, badly damaged by the Ansei earthquake of 1854 and dismantled in the Meiji era. The present keep, three storeys high on a stone base, was rebuilt in 1994 in solid wood after a long effort to collect period drawings and documents: an almost unique case among Japanese castles, nearly all of which were rebuilt in concrete after the war.
