Demachi Masugata shōtengai 出町桝形商店街

It is the end of the ‘mackerel road’: the fish arrived here on foot from the sea.

A covered shopping arcade a short walk from the point where Kyoto's two rivers meet, in a residential neighbourhood. The shopkeepers' association states that the *saba-kaidō*, the ‘mackerel road’, ended here: the road along which salted fish from Wakasa reached Kyoto on foot. Among the shops, the association lists Demachi-za and Demachi Futaba.
