Himeji Castle 姫路城
In 1945 a black camouflage net, hand-woven by the city's residents, hid it from the bombers.
Built in its present form between 1601 and 1609 by Ikeda Terumasa, son-in-law of Tokugawa Ieyasu, on older fortifications dating back to the 14th century. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, among the first Japanese sites to be inscribed, together with the Hōryū-ji temple in Nara.
