Hirosaki Castle (弘前公園) 弘前城
The 1810 tenshu was recorded as a ‘turret’, never a ‘castle’, so as not to offend the shogunate.
The fortress of the Tsugaru, lords of the Hirosaki domain in the Edo period: built in 1611 and rebuilt in 1810 after the fire of 1627. Open as a public park since 1895, it preserves its tenshu, three turrets and five original gates, among the few in Tōhoku to have survived without reinforced-concrete reconstructions.
