Iwashimizu Hachimangu 石清水八幡宮
Rebuilt in 1634, it is the largest hachiman-zukuri shrine still standing.
Founded in 860 as an offshoot of Usa Shrine, in Kyushu, to protect the capital and the imperial family from the south-west, the direction considered dangerous according to geomancy. For centuries it was, together with Ise, one of the two shrines most venerated by the imperial court.
