Izu Ōshima 伊豆大島

In 1986 the volcano woke up, and in one night the ten thousand inhabitants left the island.

Mihara has always erupted: the Meteorological Agency lists its eruptions from 680 onwards, with the large ones of the Jōkyō era (1684–90) and the An'ei era (1777–92). The last large one was in November 1986, and on the night of the 21st all ten thousand inhabitants of the island were taken off it (「21日夜全島民1万人島外へ避難(約1ヶ月)」) and returned about a month later. Since then the volcano has been kept under observation with seismometers, tiltmeters and cameras.
