Kenchō-ji (建長寺) 建長寺

You pay for a ticket even if you only go in for the trail: the Ten'en starts in here.

Founded in 1253, it is the first of the five great Zen temples of Kamakura, the ranking fixed under Ashikaga Yoshimitsu that puts Engaku-ji second and Jōmyō-ji fifth. Its 梵鐘, the bell, is a National Treasure, and the garden is one of only three designated Places of Scenic Beauty (名勝) in the municipality. The Ten'en trail, which runs along the ridge to Zuisen-ji, starts inside the grounds, beyond the Hansōbō.
