Kinpusen-ji 金峯山寺

Headquarters of the mountain ascetic discipline, with retreats on Mount Ōmine.

Kinpusen-ji is the main temple of Shugendō, the ascetic discipline practised in the mountains. The Zaō-dō, its main hall, is designated a National Treasure (国宝). The complex is part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004.
