Miho Pine Grove (三保松原) 三保松原・羽衣の松・みほしるべ
Japan's first 名勝, since 1922: here, the legend says, a goddess lost her feather robe.
It was the first area in Japan to receive the official designation of 名勝 (Place of Scenic Beauty), in 1922, ‘for the merit of the spot where, beyond the coastal pine grove, Mount Fuji can be seen’. After the war many pines were felled for firewood and for salt extraction; the grove visible today is the result of decades of reforestation and community care. In 2013 it became a component of the UNESCO property ‘Fujisan, sacred place and source of artistic inspiration’.
