The scholar worked in a room of 4 and a half tatami, with a bell of his own design.

Motoori Norinaga (1730–1801) is the foremost scholar of kokugaku, the philological study of the Japanese classics as an alternative to Chinese and Buddhist cultural hegemony. His house was moved here, within the grounds of Matsusaka Castle, in 1909; the museum beside it opened in 1970 and was renovated in 2017.
