Okushiri Tsunami Museum 奥尻島津波館

The ‘198 lights’ monument commemorates the victims of the 1993 tsunami; admission 520 yen.

On 12 July 1993 the earthquake off south-western Hokkaido generated a tsunami that reached the villages of Okushiri within minutes, rising up to 29 metres at some points on the coast and causing 198 deaths on the island. The museum, opened in 2001, arranges its exhibits in seven themes and sets a monument to the victims, ‘198 lights’ (198のひかり), alongside the models and photographs.
