Hirayama Ikuo Museum 平山郁夫美術館
Opened in 1997 for the painter born here, exposed to the bomb at just 15.
Museum devoted to the painter Hirayama Ikuo, in his home town of Setoda, on the island of Ikuchijima. Hirayama Ikuo (1930–2009) became the leading nihonga painter of the post-war period for his Silk Road cycles. On 6 August 1945 he was a third-year junior high school student at the Shūdō school in Hiroshima: he survived exposure to the bomb at 15, an experience that would mark his work for the rest of his life. The museum opened on 6 April 1997.
