The museum opened in April 1995, the first public museum of musical instruments in Japan, as part of a municipal project launched in 1981 to make Hamamatsu a ‘city of music’: the city is home to the head offices of Yamaha, Kawai and Roland. It is inside Act City, the complex that also includes the tower with the hotel and the observation deck.
