Nagarekawa 流川
The name comes from a stream that was filled in in 1913; today it has almost 2,800 venues.
A neighbourhood of nightlife and restaurants in the centre of Hiroshima, which grew up around the old course of the Nagarekawa stream; in the Edo period the stream ran from the villa and garden of the Asano lords (today's Shukkeien) to the sea, and in 1913 it was filled in. The number of venues has fallen from a historical peak of 3,000–4,000: a 2006 national police census counted about 3,400 in the wider Nagarekawa-Yagenbori area.
