Nihondaira Ropeway (日本平ロープウェイ) 日本平ロープウェイ
In service since 1957: 47-seat cabins, a 120 m vertical rise in five minutes.
Operated by the railway company Shizuoka Tetsudō (静岡鉄道), since 1957 the ropeway has linked the panoramic summit of Nihondaira (reachable by car or scheduled bus from Shizuoka city) to the Kunōzan Tōshōgū shrine, mausoleum of the first shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu. What makes it an entry in its own right, separate from the shrine it serves, is the installation itself: how long it has been in service, the three-cable system with two cabins, the length of the span.
