Ninoshima is an island in Minami Ward, about twenty minutes by ferry from Ujina pier. It was a maritime quarantine station from the end of the nineteenth century; on 6 August 1945, the day of the atomic bomb, the former station became a field hospital and received about 10,000 wounded brought by ship from Hiroshima in the weeks that followed. Today the island lives off fishing, a small settlement and the people who climb Aki no Kofuji or go down to Nagahama beach.
