Ohana and Shōtōen Garden 柳川藩主立花邸 御花・立花氏庭園(松濤園)
In the pond, among 280 black pines and 1,500 stones, wild ducks gather in winter.
The residence was built in 1738 by the fifth daimyō (feudal lord) of the Tachibana family, Sadayoshi, who moved some buildings there from the nearby Yanagawa Castle. The Shōtōen Garden was added in 1909–10. In 1978 the Shōtōen was designated a 名勝 (meishō, Place of Scenic Beauty); in 2011 the designation was extended to the whole complex, about 7,000 tsubo (a traditional unit of area, about 23,000 m²).
