Ōkawachiyama, the village of the secret kilns 大川内山
From 1675 to 1871, the secret Nabeshima kiln: no entry for anyone who was not a craftsman.
An isolated valley chosen by the Saga domain in 1675 (Enpō 3) as the seat of the secret official kiln of the Nabeshima clan, in operation until the abolition of the domains in 1871, with about 31 workers, counting potters, decorators and apprentices. Today some thirty workshops operate here, carrying on the tradition of Nabeshima porcelain, whose contemporary transmission includes a Living National Treasure (the 14th Imaemon, 2014).
