Itsukushima Shrine 厳島神社

The great torii, 16.6 metres tall and 60 tonnes, is not anchored: it stands by its own weight.

Founded, according to tradition, in 593, the shrine took on its current appearance (pavilions linked by corridors over the water) in 1168 at the wish of Taira no Kiyomori. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The great torii seen offshore is the ninth, in its current form since 1875, and has been restored several times since then.
