Fushimi Inari Shrine 伏見稲荷大社
4 km and two hours to the 233 m summit, under ten thousand gates. Always open, free.
Founded in 711, it is the head shrine of the roughly thirty thousand Inari shrines across Japan. The torii (the red gates that mark the entrance to a shrine) donated by worshippers form tunnels all the way up Mount Inari, which is 233 metres high.
