Sazae-dō (Entsū Sansō-dō) 旧正宗寺三匝堂(さざえ堂)

The way up and the way down never cross: double-spiral ramps from 1796, rare anywhere in the world.

Buddhist hall on Mount Iimoriyama, in Aizuwakamatsu: the same hill where, on 23 August 1868, during the Boshin War, nineteen young members of the Byakkotai took their own lives, believing, misled by the smoke of a fire in the city, that Tsuruga Castle had fallen. Their tomb now receives about two million visitors a year.
