Shimabara 島原(島原大門・角屋・輪違屋)
The Sumiya is the only *ageya* left in Japan: the house for banquets, not for living in.
Kyoto's licensed pleasure quarter from 1640. Three things remain of it: the wooden gate, the Shimabara Ōmon; the Sumiya, the only surviving *ageya* in Japan (the house where banquets were held, not the one where people lived), an Important Cultural Property since 1952 and now a museum; and the Wachigaiya, which the house itself states was founded in 1688 and rebuilt in 1857, still a working teahouse today.
