Hachikō Statue ハチ公像
Statue of the Akita dog that waited at the station for years after his master's death.
The most used meeting point in Tokyo. The first statue, by Teru Andō, was inaugurated on 21 April 1934 and Hachikō attended the ceremony; in 1944 it was melted down in the wartime requisition of metals. Today's statue is the second, by Takeshi Andō (the first sculptor's son), unveiled on 15 August 1948, and the Shibuya city library describes it as a symbol of reconstruction and peace. The dog was real: he waited for Professor Ueno in front of the station for nine years.
