Tenmonkan (天文館) 天文館

The name comes from a 1779 observatory, built to work out a calendar that was Satsuma's alone.

Central district of Kagoshima-shi, which grew up on the site of the former samurai quarter around the Meijikan/Tenmonkan. In 2026 it is also the centre of the Ohara Matsuri, the largest festival in southern Kyūshū, and, like many Japanese historic centres, it faces a hollowing-out of commercial activity (空洞化) even though it remains the hub of the city's nightlife.
