Tsumago-juku 妻籠宿
‘Do not sell, do not rent, do not destroy’: the local pact behind the national law.
A post town on the Nakasendō, the road that linked Edo and Kyoto through the mountains, as an alternative to the coastal Tōkaidō. In September 1976 it was one of the first in Japan to be designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings: it got there early because the residents had pledged, in a local pact, not to sell, rent or destroy their houses, a grassroots movement that preceded and prompted the national law on preservation districts. Together with Magome, it is part of the best-preserved stretch of the whole route.
