Uesugi Shrine 上杉神社

It stands on the old okugoten of Yonezawa Castle, which never had a tenshu.

Founded to honour Uesugi Kenshin (1530–1578), a warlord of the Sengoku period, on the site of Yonezawa Castle. The castle never had a tenshu: its defences relied on earthworks and moats, traces of which remain in the park that now surrounds the shrine.
