Unzen Jigoku 雲仙地獄

Thirty vents of sulphurous steam, the scene of the martyrdom of Christians in the seventeenth century.

An active volcanic area in the municipality of Unzen, the heart of one of the oldest hot-spring resorts in Japan; the hot springs feed both the hotel baths and the open-air fumaroles, which can be visited free of charge.
