Yutoku Inari Shrine 祐徳稲荷神社
The shrine on stilts welcomes three million visitors a year; it was rebuilt in 1957.
Founded in 1687 (Jōkyō 4), it is one of the three major Inari shrines in Japan together with Fushimi Inari and Kasama Inari, and is nicknamed the ‘Nikkō of western Kyūshū’ (鎮西日光). The current building, the third, was rebuilt in 1957 by the architect Minami Kaku (the same architect as Ise Shrine) after a fire in 1949.
