Kumamoto Stall Village (熊本屋台村) 熊本屋台村
Fourteen rice spirits at 100 yen a small glass, in rotation among 27 distilleries.
Opened on 3 June 2022 as a 屋台村, that is, a village of street stalls gathered in a single enclosure. The project deliberately follows the rule of the mobile stalls of the Edo period, ‘one host for every eight customers’, and that is why every venue has a counter and none has a dining room: the idea is that the customer talks with the cook and then moves on to the next stall. The Kuma valley, where the shochu of the tasting stall comes from, is the distillery area in the south of the prefecture.
