Toshimaya Shuzō 豊島屋酒造株式会社
Sake since 1935 in Higashimurayama: a Saturday guided tour, two hours, 1,000 yen.
The company traces its origins to a sake shop opened in Kanda (Edo) in 1596, but that was a retail business, not yet a brewery: the current production site, in Higashimurayama, dates from 1935 (Shōwa period), according to the official website. The label ‘oldest sake brewery in Tokyo’, which circulates online, comes from a single 2020 TripAdvisor review: the official website states 1935 for the current site, Wikipedia gives 1596 for the Kanda shop, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government writes ‘380 years’: three conflicting numbers, none of them an official designation. The verified and stable fact remains the founding of the current site in 1935.
