21_21 DESIGN SIGHT: a 2007 building by Tadao Andō, with a 54 m steel roof
The roof is a single folded sheet of steel 54 metres long, inspired by the ‘a piece of cloth’ concept of the fashion designer Issey Miyake, who conceived the building together with the architect Tadao Andō. 80% of the floor area lies underground. It has no permanent collection: it hosts themed temporary exhibitions (materials, insects, perception) several times a year, so what you see changes with every visit.
The design museum opened on 30 March 2007 in the garden of Tokyo Midtown, a complex built between 2004 and 2007 on a site occupied for 400 years by feudal residences and then by the Japan Defense Agency. It grew out of an idea by Issey Miyake, with architecture by Tadao Andō.
ℹ️ Open 10:00–19:00, last entry 18:30; closed on Tuesdays, from 27 December to 3 January and on installation days between one exhibition and the next. The ticket price changes according to the current exhibition.
