The ward's own aquarium since 1991: tunnel tank, dolphin shows, 1,350 yen

In the public park at Katsushima, by the sea, visitors stop in front of the tunnel tank to watch sharks pass overhead. Outside, seals, sea lions and dolphins perform at set times. It is a local aquarium, run by the municipality of Shinagawa since 1991: it is small, and you can see it in little more than an hour.

Opened in 1991 by Shinagawa Ward inside the public park facing the sea (しながわ区民公園), it is a municipal facility distinct from the newer and better-known Maxell Aqua Park in Takanawa, which is in another part of the city with a different private operator. The stated theme is ‘encounters with the sea and rivers’: the underwater tunnel tank and the daily shows of dolphins, sea lions and seals have remained the main attraction for more than thirty years. In 2026 the aquarium turns 35 (5 October).

ℹ️ Open 10:00–17:00, last entry at 16:30; closed on Tuesdays, but open during the school holidays (spring, Golden Week, summer, winter). Tickets: adults (high school and up) 1,350 yen, elementary and junior high 600 yen, children from 4 years 300 yen, ward residents' discount at 800 yen, over-65s 1,200 yen (aquarium.gr.jp/price). ⚠️ The TripAdvisor page notes that the facility does not comply with the platform's current animal welfare policy (shows with dolphins and sea lions): something to know before choosing between this aquarium and other options. Paid car park (100 yen/20 min, from secondary sources).
