Its garden has been first in the world for 22 years according to an American magazine; it never closes.
The founder, Adachi Zenkō, a local businessman, opened the museum in 1970 to show together his collection of modern Japanese painting (about 2,000 works, 120 of them by Yokoyama Taikan) and a garden of fifty thousand tsubo (about 165,000 square metres including the shakkei, the landscape borrowed from the hills in the background) divided into a dry landscape garden, a moss garden and a garden of white pine and white sand. Since 2003, every year, the American magazine Sukiya Living Magazine has ranked it the best garden in Japan: in 2024 that made twenty-two years in a row. The garden never closes, not a single day, all year round.
