Seventeen pandas born here since 1978: the highest number of births outside China.
Opened on 22 April 1978 as ‘Nanki Shirahama World Safari’, the park covers about 800,000 square metres and combines a zoo, an aquarium (Marine World) and an amusement park on a single ticket. Since 1994 it has hosted giant pandas on loan from the Chengdu base in China: seventeen births up to 2018, the highest number outside China. In June 2025 four pandas were returned to China, reducing the colony on site: this is a live situation, to be checked before planning a visit around the pandas.
An exception to the band's cap (§1 of the campaign brief, traveller's decision of 05/09/2026): a major zoo/safari park does not take up one of the mid band's own 15–20 entries.
ℹ️ Admission charged, with seasonal hours (to be checked on the official website). About 10 minutes by bus from Shirahama Station.
