‘Rycom’ was the Ryukyu Command, and today it is the official name of the district.
The centre stands on a military golf course returned in 2010, inside Camp Zukeran, and the name comes from there: Rycom was the abbreviation of Ryukyu Command, the American command that stood on this ridge a hundred metres above the sea. The place name survived in the crossroads and the slope, and since 7 September 2019 it has been the official name of the district, chosen through a public call. At the entrance there is a tank of over a hundred thousand litres with twenty-five species of fish from the sea of Okinawa, made with the cooperation of the Churaumi foundation.
Opened on 25 April 2015 in Kitanakagusuku, on a plot of about 175,000 square metres. It houses about 230 shops on five floors, some sixty restaurants and a cinema with nine screens. The roof is inspired by red Okinawan roof tiles; at the entrance there is a large pair of ceramic shisa by a craftsman from Yomitan.
ℹ️ Shops 10:00–22:00, restaurants 11:00–23:00, cinema until midnight; open all year. Free car park, about four thousand spaces, with fifty-three disabled spaces. Forty minutes by car from the airport, four kilometres from the Kitanakagusuku toll gate; by bus, Higa-nishi bus stop is five minutes' walk away.
