On 12 December 1937 it was the first ski area in Japan to be internationally certified.
The first skiing at Myōkō dates back to the Meiji era, but it was in 1937, on 12 December, that the Akakura ski area became the first in Japan to be certified as an international ski resort. In 1950 the country's first ski lift approved by the Ministry of Transport was installed there, shared with neighbouring Ikenotaira Kayaba. The hot-spring town of Akakura Onsen, on the doorstep of the slopes, is older than skiing itself.
