12,968 original works by Yanase, who opened it in his lifetime because of his friend Tezuka, who died before him.
Opened on 21 July 1996 in Kami, the home town of Yanase Takashi, the creator of Anpanman. Yanase paid for the museum himself after learning that the one dedicated to his friend Osamu Tezuka had been built only after Tezuka's death: he thought that, had it been done in his lifetime, his friend would have liked to see the result. The rooms hold 12,968 works, original drawings and illustrations, covering Anpanman as well as Yanase's poems and picture books; outside stand a statue of Anpanman (2011) and a large Dadandan (2008).
Run by the public interest foundation that bears Yanase's name. Since 2025 entry has been by booking only, with a cap of 3,000 visitors a day.
ℹ️ Booking required since 2025, daily cap of 3,000 visitors. Two galleries: the Anpanman Museum and the Poetry and Picture Book Gallery.
