The least populated village in Japan: the ship docks half the time.

You can only get there from Hachijōjima, and in two ways that are both tight: a nine-seat helicopter, twenty minutes, all year round; or the Kuroshio-maru, which however docks 50–60% of the time (「就航率は50〜60%」), and you find out at seven that morning whether it sails. The ship and the helicopter do not connect.

The municipality presents itself as 「日本一人口の少ない村です」, the village with the smallest population in Japan. It was born from a volcano, out at sea south of the Izu Islands.

ℹ️ ⚠️ You do not plan to go to Aogashima: you plan to try. Helicopter from Hachijōjima, nine seats, booked separately; Kuroshio-maru ship from Hachijōjima, docking 50–60% of the time, with the decision made at 7 in the morning. If you go, allow for extra days on Hachijōjima, on the way out and on the way back.
