Aoyama Gakuin began in 1874 from the merger of three Methodist missionary schools; the university as such dates from 1949, and in 2024 the institution turned one hundred and fifty. The ginkgo avenue running from the main gate to the centre of the campus was planted after the 1923 Kantō earthquake, donated by the junior high school student committee. It is not the ginkgo avenue of Jingū Gaien, which is outside, in the middle of the park, and runs for three hundred metres to the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery: they are two different rows of trees, and sources on the series often confuse them.
ℹ️ It is a working university, and the official pages do not state whether people who do not study here can enter. The main gate opens onto Aoyama-dōri, and the ginkgo avenue starts there.

In the fifteenth episode L meets Light in front of the university, and shortly afterwards Misa Amane, who is arrested. Behind them runs the ginkgo avenue inside the campus, beyond the main gate.
