Beppu Tower, 100 metres tall (observation deck at 55 metres), was completed on 10 May 1957 for the Beppu Hot Spring Tourism Industry Expo. It is the third-tallest observation tower in Japan after the Nagoya Television Tower and Osaka's Tsūtenkaku, and was designed by Naitō Tachū, an engineer known as ‘the tower doctor’ for having designed six of the country's most famous towers, including Tokyo Tower. The structure, in steel and reinforced concrete, was conceived to withstand typhoons. After an extensive renovation between May 2022 and January 2023, it reopened with a renovated observation deck, a café, an exhibition space, an accommodation facility and rooftop areas; in August 2023 it received the Japanese Night View Heritage designation.
