Some of the trees are three hundred years old: planted to stop typhoons, not to give shade.
The fukugi (福木) is a traditional windbreak tree in Okinawa, used for centuries to protect houses from typhoons: here, in the village of Bise, several thousand remain, forming a dense grid around about 250 houses, with the oldest specimens estimated at around three hundred years old. Walking or cycling between the two rows of green shade, a few minutes from the Churaumi Aquarium, is the whole attraction: there is no ticket and no opening hours, only the avenue.
The Bise district, at the tip of the Motobu Peninsula, still keeps the traditional grid layout of the village, with the houses enclosed within their own fence of trees.
ℹ️ Always open, free of charge. Bicycle hire available at the entrance to the avenue; some families also offer rides in a cart pulled by a water buffalo.
