A fan made from female bamboo in over 20 stages: a nationally designated traditional craft since 2003.
The Bōshū fan, produced in Tateyama and Minamibōsō, is made in more than twenty stages from local female bamboo, which grows with long internodes and is light but strong. It is one of the ‘three great fans of Japan’, together with the Marugame (Kagawa) and Kyō (Kyoto) fans. The hall, run by the association for the promotion of the craft, sells the fans and explains how they are made.
Production in Bōshū began in the Meiji era (Meiji 10, 1877) in what is now the city of Tateyama and spread to the nearby villages. In March 2003 the Bōshū fan became the first craft product of Chiba Prefecture to receive the national designation of ‘traditional craft’ (伝統的工芸品).
