The former prefectural office, from 1916, is free and is the finishing point of the Hanagasa parade.
The building, completed in 1916 in English Renaissance style, housed the prefectural offices and the provincial assembly until 1975: the restored rooms inside (the council chamber, the governor's office) can be visited free of charge. Every evening in early August the Hanagasa parade, with thousands of dancers and the typical straw hat decorated with safflower blossoms, comes right up to its façade.
Former seat of the Yamagata prefectural government and the provincial assembly, built of brick on a timber frame in English Renaissance style, completed in 1916 (Taishō 5). Restored and reopened as a civic museum (山形県郷土館) after its administrative role ended in 1975. Designated a national Important Cultural Property on 28/12/1984.
ℹ️ Open 9:00–16:30, free entry. Closed on the first and third Monday of the month (the following day if a public holiday) and over the year-end and New Year period.
