Ten km of cliffs 40–50 m high, known as the ‘Dover of the East’: a Natural Monument since 2016.
The coast runs almost straight for about ten kilometres between Chōshi and Asahi, with pale cliff faces that the sea wears away by a few metres every year. Its resemblance to the white cliffs of the English Channel earned it the nickname ‘Dover of the East’. A path runs along the stretch near Chōshi Marina beach, which can be reached in about ten minutes on foot.
The Byōbugaura cliffs, formed of layers of mud and sand from the Pliocene and Pleistocene, were designated a national ‘Place of Scenic Beauty’ and ‘Natural Monument’ in March 2016.
