The easternmost point of inhabited Japan: the disputed island of Kaigara is just 3.7 km away.
From the tip of the cape, the easternmost point of inhabited Japan, you can see Kaigara Island with the naked eye: it is part of the Northern Territories, the islands disputed between Japan and Russia since the end of the Second World War, and lies just 3.7 km off the coast. The ‘Bridge of the Four Islands’ monument (四島のかけはし), erected in 1980, stands over the ‘flame of prayer’, lit for the return of the territories.
The cape is on the Nemuro Peninsula. Nostalgia Promontory Park, which lies beside it, holds the monuments dedicated to the call for the return of the Northern Territories.
