Hundreds of rivulets pour down 150 m of curved rock: a component of Fuji's UNESCO site.
Not a single waterfall but a horseshoe-shaped wall of rock, about 150 metres wide and 20 high, from which the rivulets of Fuji's underground water seep out (not from a single mouth but from hundreds of points between the layers of lava): the effect is of threads of white silk, hence the name. A short path from the car park leads to the viewpoint over the pool below.
The waterfall formed where the Shiraito lava flow, coming down from Fuji, meets the sediments of the older Kofuji: rainwater and meltwater, seeping into the porous rock upstream, re-emerge here at several levels along the curved wall. It is one of the components of the UNESCO site ‘Fujisan, sacred place and source of artistic inspiration’ (2013), a national natural monument, and is among Japan's 100 most beautiful rivers/waterfalls (1990 selection).
ℹ️ The official car park is open 9:00–16:30: 500 yen per car, 1,000 per coach and 200 per motorbike. The waterfall is an open-air public area with no gate; the path has no stated closing time. The width reported by the municipality is 150 metres.
