The present tenshu, with three storeys and one underground level, was completed in 1854, the year after the arrival of the Black Ships: it is the last great work of castle architecture of the Edo period, and the only one of the twelve original tenshu to bear the Tokugawa Aoi crest on its roof tiles. Twenty-one buildings of the complex are national Important Cultural Properties. You go up by ropeway or chairlift to the summit enclosure.
