A church from 1933 built with the faithful by Father Garnier, in Amakusa for 50 years.
At the top of the climb stands the white Romanesque church, finished in 1933 by Father Garnier with the help of the village's faithful. In the grounds there are his statue, which people call Pāteru-san, and a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes; inside you can see stained glass and window decorations, but photography is not allowed. Two hundred metres further down is the Rosary Museum.
Christianity reached Amakusa in 1566 and was banned in 1614; the ban fell in 1873 and in Ōe the faithful, with Michida Kakichi and others, built a church that became the centre of the island's Christian revival: the tourist association calls it the first in Amakusa after the end of the ban. The present building dates from 1933 (Shōwa 8), built by the French missionary Louis F. Garnier with the local faithful. Garnier stayed in Amakusa for 50 years and died aged 82 without returning to France. The church is not among the twelve components of the UNESCO site of the Hidden Christians of Nagasaki and Amakusa, of which only Sakitsu (about 4 km away) is on the island: it is a place of worship still in use.
ℹ️ Church: open 9:00–17:00, no closing day, but you cannot enter during masses, funerals, weddings and other services, and it may close suddenly for events of the faithful. The tourist association's notice of 01/10/2026 lists the closing dates from October: for Ōe none (only Sakitsu, on 17/10). The pages read do not mention a ticket and do not ask for booking, which is instead needed for Sakitsu. Photography is forbidden inside; in the grounds, photos and filming for commercial use require written permission from the tourist association (0969-22-2243). Car park of 10 spaces at the church, at the top of a road that starts from the Rosary Museum car park; coaches use the museum's (25 cars, 4 buses). By bus: stop 天主堂入口 and 5 minutes on foot (from 本渡バスセンター with a change at 一町田中央; timetables not read). From Kumamoto about 2 hr 50 min by car. Rosary Museum (天草ロザリオ館, 天草町大江1749, tel. 0969-42-5259): 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:30, closed on Wednesdays (the next day if it is a public holiday) and from 30 December to 1 January; adults 300 yen, high school 200, elementary and junior high 150.
