The roof is a flight of steps, and you can walk on it: the museum is by Andō Tadao.
The building is concrete and rises in tiers until it becomes a staircase you walk up, with a tower sticking up at the top; the actual museum is underneath. Inside are the swords, clasps, earrings and rings brought out of the Ichisuka kofun, the burial mounds of the rulers, and the story of relations with the continent between the fourth and seventh centuries.
Opened in 1994 in the municipality of Kanan, on the hills of the Ichisuka kofun. It was designed by the architect Andō Tadao, who lists it among his major works.
ℹ️ The museum opens at 9:45 and the galleries at 10:00; it closes at 17:00, with last entry at 16:30. Closed on Mondays (Tuesdays if Monday is a public holiday) and from 28 December to 4 January. The permanent exhibition costs 310 yen, 210 for students and over-65s, free up to junior high. From Kishi or Tondabayashi stations on the Kintetsu Nagano Line, bus to the museum bus stop and then six hundred metres uphill on foot.
